The annual Callan Park Weed Spraying program is scheduled for 4 days from 16 to 20 September 2024 (weather permitting) to target and reduce bindi and broad-leaf weeds invading popular grass areas.
The routine treatment aims to improve the overall quality and usability of Callan Park.
Areas excluded from treatment include Waterfront Green and council maintained playing fields.
It is important to spray the weeds ahead of the summer months to limit the germination stage and break the plant lifecycle to protect park users and dog paws from the spiky seeds.
Callan Park will remain open to the public during this necessary weed maintenance.
Signage will be displayed in areas where spraying is taking place and park users are asked to avoid the area during this time. Park users are only recommended to enter the treated site once signage is removed.
Pesticides in public open spaces
Greater Sydney Parklands is committed to the safety of all our park users and implements best practices for the ongoing care and maintenance of our parklands. Our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program serves as a comprehensive approach that considers methods of pest control before restoring to chemical treatment.
In this instance, the weed spraying will be carried out with ‘Stadium Turf.’ The active ingredients in Stadium Turf include:
- Clopyralid
- Difufencian
- MCPA
Callan Park is included in the Greater Sydney Parklands Pesticide Use Notification Plan 2023, a statutory requirement which outlines the Parklands’ approach for their safe use. It has been approved by the Environmental Protection Authority to conform with the Pesticides Act and Regulations.
Due to the size of Callan Park and overall use of the area, the proposed application is recognised as industry best practice.
Low risk pesticides
Diluted applications of these pesticides are not harmful to humans, wildlife or domestic animals.
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) consider Stadium Turf and the active ingredients used in Callan Park’s annual application a low risk to bees. Stadium is registered for use in public spaces and APVMA has considered the risk to bees as acceptable as this product is registered for control of weeds including clover in turf.
