The People's Loop
Transforming walking and cycling in Parramatta Park

We’re transforming walking and cycling in World Heritage-listed Parramatta Park for the benefit of the community and visitors.
The People’s Loop is an exciting and innovative long-term plan to remove most vehicles from the core of the park, returning this space to the community for recreational use.
By moving cars to the edges of the park, we will provide a better and safer experience for park visitors. We will create a wider and more generous pedestrian and cycling loop. This will reduce conflict between different users and modes of transport and improve the significant cultural and heritage landscape of the park for generations to come.
In July 2020, we received $2.5 million to deliver stage 1 of the People’s Loop, specifically for improvements in the West Domain area. Stage 1 was completed in 2023.
We will deliver the People’s Loop in stages as funding becomes available.
The People’s Loop – Stage 1
Stage 1 works were completed in 2023. They included:
- building a new, sensitively designed car parking area with 54 spaces in the south-west corner of the park, set back from Park Avenue, with a landscape buffer to the street.
- new car parking bays with 35 spaces accessed from Park Avenue between Queens Road Gatehouse and Coleman Oval. This continues the existing parking along the street.
- an upgrade to the Queens Road Gatehouse entry to improve pedestrian and vehicular access into the park and respond to changes in traffic circulation from the Parramatta Light Rail project
- new park furniture and signage
- improvements to pedestrian footpaths leading into the park from Park Avenue
- landscape improvements, include planting 170 advanced native trees.
Future stages
We will deliver the People’s Loop in stages as funding becomes available and in consultation with park users and the broader community.
