Nitrogen propelled teddy bears, a life-size roaming dinosaur, high-powered marshmallow launchers and guaranteed explosions – it’s all part of the FREE family fun at two huge events to celebrate National Science Week with Greater Sydney Parklands.
More than 18,000 Sydneysiders are expected to join the fun at the much-loved Science in the Scrub at Western Sydney Parklands on Sunday 11 August and Science in the Swamp at Centennial Park on Sunday 18 August.
Whether it’s meeting a dinosaur, flying a mini helicopter, or encountering our menagerie of Aussie animals, there’s an abundance of stalls, shows, hands-on activities and food vans to keep the whole family engaged.
Dr Graham Walker brings his spectacular ‘Blow Up Science’ show to both events for the first time, teaching Newton’s Laws and chemical reactions with guaranteed explosive fun and astonishing experiments.
Also new this year, join the Cool Aeronautics team for a thrilling demonstration on crafting and flying mini helicopters, observe industrious bees in action with Rooftop Bees, and acquire essential technological skills from Robokids for success in an automated future. Plus, engage in hands-on science experiments hosted by Macquarie University’s National Indigenous Science Education Program only at Science in the Scrub.
Crowd-favourite, Ginger the life-sized Australovenator dinosaur, will be back and don’t miss the always popular Australian Maritime Museum’s pop-up Ocean Lab, Australian Wildlife Display’s wildlife show, Bugs About live insects, Frog and Tadpole Study Group frog exhibit and the NSW Geological Society’s rock and fossil display.
“Our free family Science Week events are a great way to introduce young children to the joys of science, while enjoying our beautiful parklands,” said Greater Sydney Parklands Chief Executive, Joshua French.
“The week is full of interactive games and live science shows, put together to create an excitement about science that we hope will last for a lifetime.
“This year’s events will feature more than 30 activity stations, including hands-on science experiments and the chance to learn from real-life scientists including geologists, zoologists and marine biologists.”
Greater Sydney Parklands’ Science in the Scrub and Science in the Swamp events are supported by Inspiring Australia and the Australian Government as part of National Science Week. National Science Week (10-18 August) is Australia’s annual opportunity to meet scientists, discuss hot topics, get hands-on with science, and celebrate its cultural and economic impact on society.
